Boxing is the single best thing I’ve done in dealing with Parkinson’s since I was diagnosed four years ago at age 70. And the class in Ladner has been a great support. I have a lot of respect for Carm. He has been a great help as a teacher and coach – friendly, clear, challenging, and patient.
My neurologist says, “Medication is helpful in the present to reduce the impact of the symptoms in the moment, but exercise is for the long haul to slow the progression of the disease.” And research shows that boxing is an especially great exercise for Parkinson’s.
Boxing is obviously strenuous, but it has many other helpful features. It works the whole body, and especially both arms and legs. The boxing moves are quite varied and can become a challenge to remember, which is a good thing! Boxing also helps with coordination of the mental with the physical properties. Carm calls out
combinations of punches which I have to translate quickly from thinking to physical output.

As Carm gradually speeds up the combinations it can become quite a challenging workout. I am very glad to have this great service here in South Delta, and I highly recommend it for any person facing the challenges of Parkinson’s.As a student in Carm’s class for the last year I have had the benefits of more advanced training which has had a positive impact on my Parkinson’s disability. It really does help with many of the symptoms and helps maintain fitness. It is also just plain fun and good social interaction. Looking for something different, check it out !

I am 72 years old, diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2012. I was a novice when I started to attend our boxing sessions several years ago, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Under Carm’s expert direction, he has challenged us both mentally and physically as we work through our various boxing exercises. Carm integrates past boxing experience and teaching instruction in the fundamentals of boxing with a sensitivity to the challenges of living with Parkinsons.
The classes are fun and I have noticed definite health benefits, including increased energy levels, improved core body strength and balance, and greater flexibility. The camaraderie and social contact with others facing the challenges of Parkinsons makes these boxing sessions with Carm most enjoyable.

I have been attending Carm’s boxing sessions for about a year and a half now. I enjoy attending because I find once I’m finished I feel like I had a workout both physically and mentally. You think about the punching sequences and you are getting a physical workout. I highly recommend these classes.
